Combining power and grace, this well aged Chateau Rayas showed really well its potential with ample fruits and tertiary aroma of truffles, game and tobacco. Excellent round finish, this wine is at its peak I believe.

Gorgeous aromas of blackberries, raspberries and hints of tar follow through to a full-bodied palate with supersilky tannins and a long, long finish. Classy red from Maremma. Rich yet subtle. Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Petit Verdot. Best after 2008.

ALCOHOL: 13.5%
RATED: 03/30/2009 |

COMMENTS:
This wine has a light pale brick red robe. The smell is fruity first (there is somthing that reminds of Amaretto cherries) and then become a little animal, with leather or fur aromas. The attack is very light, but it becomes quickly full bodied and velvety, and it has a delicious spicy after-taste with cinnamon and clove flavors. The best about this wine? The more you drink it, the more you like it, so don't be afraid to take another glass.

COMMENTS:
What a great nose this wine had. The fruit was still there, but mostly faint dried currants and flowers. The tannins were very soft, virtually almost non-existent, giving way to more ethereal maturation characters. The wine was mostly pure tertiary flavors, with truffles, earth, dust, leather, mushrooms, cedar and tobacco leaves. Very complex. Lean and focused. A wine so gentle on the palate. A great wine! Jo said this was a very elegant wine. I couldn't agree more. This is the oldest wine we've both had thus far.

COMMENTS:
The 96 Dom is an exceptional example of how Champagne, in all its simplicity, can be more than words can describe. This wine does not over extend itself in any way, rather it seduces. It opens with aromas of citrus, toast and yeast and then follows with similar flavors. Mildly frothy in the mouth, the wine has a gradual warming sensation that brings in a mineral component. The finish is long and glorious. Reminded my of the 96 J. Lassalle, but with all the loose ends tied up. You can find a more flashy Champagne, but this one really did it on elegance.

(not blind): Brilliant light ruby, light rim, fat tears, skin like sediment on the side of the bottle. Multitude of roasted aromas in the nose, silky cool. Medium body, extremely well balanced but with a good acidity spine, velvety tannins, roasted nuts. Aftertaste very long and very agreeable - a nearly perfect wine. Score: 50 + 4 for optic + 14 for bouquet + 19 for taste + 9 for overall = total score of 96. I am not sure if this wine has gained by cellaring but at least it has not degraded. Overall kind of smooth, but the clear acidity gives some counter balance.

COMMENTS:
A truly remarkable white wine, the 1999 Chevalier-Montrachet is a beautiful green-yellow that has a soft and glowing core. Initially, this wine was very tight. However, with extended decanting, the wine softened and began to show the both the power and finesse of this magical vineyard. Its most distinguished quality was the cotton candy like mouthfeel... nearly perfect. The mouthfeel influenced the flavors, which were of soft citrus fruits and minerals. Lay it down in the cellar, or decant it for at least 4 hours.

The 96 Reserve Mondavi Cab is at its peak and should be drunk now. It is in absolute perfect harmony with a rich body and heavy tannin that is now well integrated. Brick red and purple hues lead to cedar, smoke, black currant and chocolate. A mouth coating wine that leaves a long impregnating finish.

COMMENTS:
One of the top 2001 Napa cabs that I have had the pleasure to drink so far. This wine is simply great.
It has an overwhelming soft melted caramel and toffee character to it that makes it deliciously plush. In addition, it is layered with sweet dark fruits and heavy tannins. The tannins are a bit dominating now, but I would expect with 10 years of cellar time that this will be resolved. The finish is long and mouth filling.

Made from 100% Pinot Noir, this south facing Clos is one of the 3 Clos in champagne. This champagne tasted like a Chassagne Montrachet with very fine bubbles. Unlike other champagne, the Clos des Goisses has more weight and higher viscousity, yet it still maintain the elegance and subtlety of a great champagne. It was a great match with the salmon tartare we had.
