1982 Krug - Clos du Mesnil
(France / Champagne)
RATED: 10/26/2004
COMMENTS: Very ripe and thick. Superb concentration, it gripped on the palate with the intensity of a sautern, except that the fine bubble and the acidity balance the full-bodied champagne extraordinary well. Packed with both high tone and earthy elements. Very complex and fine.

1985 Domaine Ruinart - Rose
(France / Champagne)
RATED: 10/26/2004
COMMENTS: One of my best Rose experience. The nose reminded me of a great aged chambertin. It felt like you are drinking a mixture of chambertin and montrachet. Although the finish was not quite as long as expected, it is extremely complex and full-bodied.

2007 Michel Despres - Domaine des Deux Fontaines
(France / Burgundy / Beaujolais / Fleurie)
ALCOHOL: 13.0%
RATED: 12/20/2008
COLOR: Violet.
AROMA: Dark Fruits. Rose Petals.
PROFILE: Sweet. Balanced. Effervescent Mouthfeel. Rich Body. Light Tannin. Medium Finish.
COMMENTS: This wine is a great coktail of sweet and fruity odors, a pleasure for the nose. In fact, they are so many black fruits odors that it is difficult to define excactly which one but the overall smells is a pleasure.
In mouth this light red wine is enough tannic to show you at first it is on your tong and sugary enough tou give you a very good taste then. It ends with a delicious dark fruity flavour which stays in mouth shortly.

A great light wine!

2007 Claude Papin - Beaulieu - Roinieres
(France / Loire Valley / Anjour-Saumur / Coteaux du Layon)
RATED: 06/02/2010
COLOR: Golden.
AROMA: Honey. Fig. Jam. white flowers.
FLAVOR: Pineapple. Honey.
PROFILE: Sweet. Balanced. Rich Body. Long Finish.
COMMENTS: This Coteaux du Layon wine is an extremely complex blend of sweet pleasant flavours that remind us of summer and sunshine. It is of a bright and brilliant golden color, pretty much recalling the honey of its aroma and flavour. As well as honey, one can also smell cristallised exotic fruits such as mango and pineapple and maybe even a hint of jasmin. In mouth, it tastes of honey and pineapple once again. This wine is also very well balanced between sweetness and freshness. It is mellow, rich and long in mouth, and is one of the best wines I ever tasted!

1996 Denis Mortet - Chambertin
(France / Burgundy / Cote de Nuits / Gevrey-Chambertin)
RATED: 08/16/2004
COLOR: Tile Red.
AROMA: Rose Petals. Truffles. Violets. Game. Plum. Raspberry. Red Fruits.
FLAVOR: Truffles. Coffee. Fig. Raisin. Raspberry. Red Fruits. Mineral.
PROFILE: Crisp Acidity. Complex. Balanced. Astringent Smooth Mouthfeel. Rich Body. Moderate Tannin. Long Finish.
COMMENTS: Such purity of fruit! Dense but not a bit heavy with a great structure that showed potential for improvement. Acidity was quite high which is typical of this vintage giving it the ingredient for aging. It started to develop the typical well aged burgundy nose but it should continue to develop more complexity. It might start to go into that awkward stage of development and closed down for some time. I anticipate it to be fully developed by 2006 and on.

2000 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou

RATED: 12/25/2005
COLOR: Blue Purple.
AROMA: Smoky. Blackberry. Black Currant.
FLAVOR: Vanilla. Almonds. Cherry. Plum. Blackberry. Black Currant. Truffles.
PROFILE: Balanced. Smooth Mouthfeel. Rich Body. Heavy Tannin. Long Finish.
COMMENTS: This one is amazing. The aromas are so apparent even on opening the bottle you can smell the vanilla and smokiness. This leads to rich layers on your tongue to savor blackberry, cherry, and currant flavors. The finish is smooth and long lasting as long as 3 minutes. This one is a keeper in the cellar! Drink 15+ years from now.

Cheers!

1999 Shafer Cabernet Sauvignon - Hillside Select
(USA / California / Napa / Stags Leap District)
RATED: 04/07/2004
COMMENTS: That Parker guy sure knows his stuff. As an amateur reviewer, I'd say this vintage is easily one of the best young CA Cabernets I've ever had. A noseful of berries and licorice set the tone. Each sip revealed another level of richness with flavors that changed in the glass. The finish seemed never to go away completely. Although it's too soon to drink this amazing wine, resisting the temptation (even at $150/bottle) was impossible. After another 10-15 years in storage, this one will still be approaching infinity.

1989 Chateau Lynch-Bages
(France / Bordeaux / Pauillac)
RATED: 01/10/2004
COMMENTS: I admit it, one of my personal favorites. Deep extraction and dark purple color. Strong Cassis in the nose, and massive body. Worth setting the stage for a meal of Young Lamb to set it off.

2000 Turley Petite Sirah - Hayne Vineyard
(USA / California / Napa / St. Helena)
RATED: 02/17/2004
COMMENTS: I've had the good fortune to taste both the 2000 and 2001 Turley Hayne Petite Syrah on a number of occasions, both on their own and in head-to-head comparison. While both a truly amazing, I'd give the edge to the 2000. The 2000 just seems to have more earth to it. This is a deep, dark, pool of inky blue-black richness. Truly this wine stands out in terms of extraction. The flavors are that of cassis and blackberries. This wine paired with Squab or Duck, will make for a very memorable experience. I usually recommend a 60-minute decant for this wine.

1992 Avignonesi - Vin Santo
(Italy / Central / Tuscany)
RATED: 03/01/2004
COMMENTS: A dark brown color, with sweet nose, this is an experience to seek out. Like drinking a liquid creme brule is the only way I could describe it. Warm cream and caramel flavors, with a nice burnt sugar finish. Mouth filling body, like drinking glycerine. Pair with dried fruits, chocolate, caramel, or cheese. This wine has enough acidity that it does not become cloying after a time.

2001 d'Arenberg Shiraz - The Dead Arm
(Australia / South Australia / McLaren Vale)
RATED: 03/01/2004
COMMENTS: I've been fortunate enough to taste this wine 4 times in early 2004. This is the kind of wine that makes me understand why Parker is such a fan of the Aussie Shiraz's. This is a dense dark pool of cassis, with smoldering oak and blackberries in the nose. I would recommend cellaring for 4 years or so, but if you must drink it now, and I can't blame you, it does benefit from a long 2+ hour decant time. The only other Deadarm I've tried was the 2000, and this blows that away! The only Shiraz I've had in recent memory that beast this would be the 01 Run Rig.

2001 Parson's Flat - Shiraz-Cabernet

RATED: 06/26/2004
COMMENTS: I was blown away with this bottle. I've had the Run Rigs, Dead Arms, and the like. But I was really impressed with this super concentrated, low-acid offering. Ripe, rounded, tannins, with a smooth 30-45 second finish. It's staill available for a bargain, I'd seek some out! Amazing flavor of cassis.

ALCOHOL: 13.5%

RATED: 09/21/2004

1989 Chateau Lynch-Bages
(France / Bordeaux / Pauillac)
RATED: 06/02/2004
COMMENTS: This was Wine Spectator's wine of the year in 1990 (or maybe 1991). It's easy to see why.... The 1989 Lynch Bages is drinking beautifully now but still has 20 years ahead of it. After decanting for two hours aromas of asphalt, chocolate and bing cherry soared from the glass. Well integrated flavors of tobacco, licorice, red raspberry, cocoa and cedar are well integrated over silky tannins. Just pour it and look at the dark, almost black ruby color. That will give you an idea of what to expect.

1991 Opus One
(USA / California / Napa / Oakville)
RATED: 06/02/2004
COMMENTS: Ahhh, this was back in the day when Opus One was actually one of the best red blends out of California. Since 1997 the quality has fallen off considerably but this 1991 might be one of the finest efforts from Opus One.

A bit restrained at first, finally the plums, cedar, spice box and very noticeable gunflint started to emerge. The nose in a word was FAT! What distinguished this wine from the others was a mindblowing midpalate with several layers of flavor. It had strong acidity and balanced but noticeable tannin. Too bad it was my first and last Opus '91, as I think this has about three more years of life before it starts downhill.

1959 Chateau Palmer
(France / Bordeaux / Margaux)
RATED: 06/02/2004
COMMENTS: Purchased from the original buyer. I don't know of any existing ratings for this wine but there should be. It's got to be one of the top five Palmers made in the last 100 years. After decanting for an hour, the wine still had a dark brick color with pink eraser coloring around the edges. Aromas of cola, cassis and chocolate covered cherries drifted out of the glass. The wine showed an array of concentrated sweet black fruit, vanilla and spice over an opulent velvety frame. It may be at its peak or possibly starting to head downhill but it was a very memorable experience.

1982 Chateau Leoville Las Cases
(France / Bordeaux / St-Julien)
RATED: 06/09/2004
COMMENTS: Deep ruby color with little sign of age. Still looked youthful and vibrant.

The wine was still displaying remarkable fruit and deep color, and the tannins while still quite evident were well under control and quite silky. The wine was going gangbusters right out of the bottle and never gave any indication of doing otherwise over the next two hours. Gorgeous nose of lead pencil, stewed plum, amazing complexity and depth. I could smell this wine for the next 20 years and be happy!

It's hard to find anything wrong with this wine. It's just entering it's adulthood so drink now or hold for another 20 years.

1990 Chateau Latour
(France / Bordeaux / Pauillac)
RATED: 12/31/2003
COMMENTS: Had this one on 12/31/03. It took hours for this wine to begin to open up, and it still was not ready but the lamb was. The Latour is a monster wine with tons of fruit that still overpowers so many of the subtle flavors in the wine. It will clearly evolve into a more refined monster as the years pass, but it will never turn into an elegant wine. Classic Latour.

1983 Chateau d'Yquem
(France / Bordeaux / Sauternes)
RATED: 12/31/2003
COMMENTS: Had some at New Year's 2003/2004 with foie gras. It was hard to separate the wine from the foie gras combination because there is simply no better or more perfect food pairing in the world than a high end Sauternes and well prepared foie gras. Nonetheless, the wine's complexity, liveliness and great structure stood out on it's own - another classic d'Yquem.

1997 Arietta - Hudson Vineyards - H Block
(USA / California / Napa)
RATED: 01/13/2004
COMMENTS: Sampled 1/13/04. The Kongsgaard Chard '01 has been stealing the spotlight lately, but its sister wine, Arietta '97, is well worth a visit and a revisit and another revisit. The nose is not huge but great. Neither its fruit nor its complexity is overwhelming but it has more than enough of both. The finish is not 1 minute long, but it is 20 seconds or more. In total, this wine is everything any red wine drinker wants in a glass. It's hard to tell how long this wine will last, but it certainly worth drinking now.

2001 Kongsgaard Chardonnay
(USA / California / Napa)
RATED: 01/14/2004
COMMENTS: If blind tasted, I could have easily picked it as a fine White Burg. The only hint that it was not a White Burg is the little extra Chardonnay fruit forward that first hits your tongue. The finish does go on and on and on (like the battery bunny). It is a very youthful wine and will certainly evolve and become more refined in the years to come, at which time it will easily rival the best White Burgs made.

2001 Pride Cabernet Sauvignon - Reserve
(USA / California / Napa / Spring Mountain District)
RATED: 04/05/2004
COMMENTS: Sampled 4/5/04. The barrel rating of the 2001 Pride (non-reserve) got all the hype, which in my mind was completely off the mark. The Pride Reserve, however, is the real deal. Although this wine took over 1 hour in a decanter to open up, the complex blackberry, cassis, currant, herb, and spice were all emerging sufficiently to recognize what this wine will become in another 5 or 7 years - a great wine - and it should continue to be a great wine for many years after that too.

1985 Moet & Chandon - Dom Perignon
(France / Champagne)
RATED: 05/02/2004
COMMENTS: Sampled 5/2/04. I had this wine one year ago and we opened my last 2 bottles last night. This is probably the best Dom you can find that is still drinking well. More complex than the 1990 but just as traditionally delicate yet full bodied. (I find the 1990 the second best vintage of all Doms still drinking well and in circulation.) It's hard to tell how much longer the 1985 will hold up (as I've had the 1980 which was clearly on the downside a year ago), so I suggest drinking up in the relatively near future.

1988 Gaja - Sperss
(Italy / Northwest / Piedmont / Barolo)
RATED: 11/16/2004
COMMENTS: Sampled 11/16/04. This wine did not take very long to open up and is showing beautifully. The color is much deeper than I thought it would be. The nose more California Cabernet-like than expected, but still clearly not California. The tannins are now completely softened and the layering of fruit, earth, spices and oak are nearly perfectly balanced. The wine has a rich finish that lasts about 15 to 20 seconds. Although perfectly ready to drink now, it might still be good 5 years from now, but why risk it?
